This varies greatly by brand and variety of yerba mate, but in general, yerba mate has a (slightly) bitter taste. This is because many yerba mate is smoked. Often, the red varieties (Elaborada) taste less bitter than the blue varieties (Despalada). This is because the blue variants have been smoked more intensely and do not contain sprigs (palos).
However, some yerba varieties are not smoked, such as the Kraus varieties.
There are also yerbas with added flavours. You can think of forest fruits, tropical fruits, orange, honey, etc. Especially the CBSé brand is very much into this. You can find all these flavours in our webshop!
Yes this is definitely possible! So you can add sugar or honey directly into your mate (cup).
Or if you have a thermos, put some sugar or honey in this. That way, you actually have sweetened water that you continuously pour into your mate.
We do recommend using as little sugar or honey as possible. We all know that excessive sugar intake is bad for our health.
